These drawings are part of my first Dalvero Academy Class Session in the summer 2012. Revising folders in my computer I came to realize that I really never posted these ones. Ops! It's me, what can I say, I think I did something when in reality I just thought about it and for some reason my brain accepts it like it's a done deal! Oh well, here they are… some more loose sketches from Summer 2012 at Disney Parks.

The USK Symposium! Workshops....

I'm going to be co-teaching a workshop at the next 3rd International Urban Sketching Symposium in Santo Domingo with my friend Inma Serrano, here are the details:

Workshop G: Improvising with line and color: The Urban Sketcher as a Storyteller

Worskhop description
There is a story in every corner of the Colonial Zone, historical facts, and architectural details inherited during the 500 hundred following the arrival of the first Europeans settlers, plus the local characters who live in the area. In this workshop, we will focus on capturing those stories and details of the first city of America using a combination of the following elements and concepts: line, color, serendipity, emphasis in the composition, and storytelling through images and words.

First part
In the first part of the workshop we will focus on “Lines, Colors and Serendipity” that are themselves abstract elements which combined allow us to represent things figuratively. The fundamental difference between each of our sketches lies in the expressiveness of combining, in a personal and unique way, these two essential elements: color and line.

Beginner sketchers sometimes feel their drawings "lack a personal style" and their trouble is finding a personal way of drawing that identifies all their works and give them an "unmistakable identity." Most of the time the essential components that are missing from our designs, to make them our own and different from others, are precisely the three we will focused on in this first part: Line, Color and Serendipity.

Participants will be encouraged to work with different types of lines according to the importance of the elements that we are seeing and we will combine in the sheet and use colour to create specific service points that emphasize the meaning of our drawings. We will look for different ways to get carried away and feel free to understand that our sketch is the one that is telling us where we have to continue. Because the accident and the serendipity of life must be definitely present in our drawings.

Second part
In the second part of the workshop we will focus on composition, emphasis and storytelling in images and words. Participants will be invited, once again, to draw the stories that will unfold in front of them in “the zone”, but this time adding text to enhance their pages with the use of typography, handwritten text or lettering designs, viewing their pages as complete layouts, finding a balance between the actual sketch and the written narrative. Participants will have the opportunity to continue working with different types of lines and with the same spontaneity encouraged during the first part of the workshop, but this time listening and recording in text what’s going on around them, to create a layout in their sketchbook that reinforces the concept of emphasis and storytelling.

Learning goals

• Lines: Look for a personal line type in its different thicknesses and proposals to create different points of attention in our drawings: close-ups, overlays, writing, etc.
• Color: Search points of interest in our sketch using a small range of colour, trying to create specific focus to guide the eye of the person who is watching our sketch.
• Improvisation: Take advantage of "drawing mistakes" and incidents that develop along the creative process, the moments of uncertainty should be harnessed to provide new and personal solutions to our sketch.
• Composition: Will look at serendipity and spontaneity but keeping in mind “composition”. Finding the balance between written text and images, using typography as a design tool to empower your drawing and the composition of your designs.
• Emphasis: The use of the following tricks to create a focus point: Black and white vs color, contrast between details of the scene vs. the open view scene, unfinished parts of the drawing vs. more detailed areas, handwritten text vs. actual typography and/or lettering.
• Storytelling: Participants will reflect on the following questions: What’s happening in front of me? How fast can I draw it and take notes of the conversations or facts involved in the scene? What’s really important in the entire scene? Who or what is the main character of my story? What’s the story? Include in the sketch unexpected situations and incidents that happen around you, surrounded sounds, moments of uncertainty... Try to take advantage of the chance to describe not only a place but a moment that is changeable, concrete and personal. (Note: Participants will be given a little brochure with a sample of different typography families and lettering for them to use as reference and a list of historical facts as well as photocopies of images showing success in the use of our main learning goals.)

Workshop flow

First part
Introduction. 5-7 minutes
Warm-up and thumbnailing: 10 minutes
Sketching time: 45 min. to 1 hour, in order to accommodate slow and fast sketchers
Questions, doubts and sharing of sketchbooks: 10-15 minutes.

Second Part
Introduction: 5-7 minutes
Warm-up and thumbnailing: 10 minutes
1 hour approx. to create the final drawings that incorporate the concepts of the fist part of the workshop (lines, color and serendipity) and the second part (composition, emphasis and storytelling); We will do one to two drawings, depending on individual speed of each sketcher.
Final wrap-up and sharing of sketchbooks and questions: 10-15 minutes.

Life in El Plata, Zaragoza / La vida en El Plata, Zaragoza.

Continuing with my trip around Zaragoza this past summer, one of the key spots to draw was El Plata, el small but full of charm place, where you can see men and women dancing on stage, with or without clothes, a great opportunity to practice figure drawing.

Continuando con mi viaje por Zaragoza este verano, uno de los sitios esenciales fue El Plata, un pequeño local con encanto propio, donde se presentan hombres y mujeres bailando en el escenario, con o sin ropa, una oportunidad excelente para practicar el dibujo de la figura humana.

Cinco Villas, Zaragoza.

Lo más hermoso de viajar es el conectar con personas de diferentes lugares, conocer gente nueva y, en mi caso, la oportunidad de disfrutar de un día completo junto a personas talentosas y muy queridas, dibujando y compartiendo anécdotas de vida. Estos dibujos fueron realizados en un día como el que acabo de describir, junto a Severino e Inma, ambos artistas y profesores de arte al igual que yo, así que te podrás imaginar la de cuentos y ocurrencias que compartimos mientras dibujábamos y paseábamos por Cinco Villas, un hermoso pueblo en las afueras de Zaragoza, donde gentilmente nos llevó a pasear Severino que es un gran conocedor del arte romano y de todas las ruinas dejadas por España.

Veo los dibujos y me entra la nostalgia de esos días llenos de tanta magia!!!!

¿Cuanto falta para el próximo verano? :-)

Albarracin

En camino de Teruel a Zaragoza una parada obligatoria es Albarracín, un hermoso pueblo situado sobre la sierra del mismo nombre, una ciudad de callejuelas y pasadizos con un encanto y belleza que no ponen en duda la razón por la cual es considera, desde 1961, monumento nacional de Espana.

Allí llegue con mis companeros de viaje durante esta etapa: Inma, Cristina, Laura, y Carlos. A Inma (de Sevilla) ya le hacía de co-piloto desde Madrid, donde tuvo la gentileza de hacerme hueco en su auto para llegar a Teruel, y a Cris, Laura y Carlos (de Málaga) los conocí durante el taller "De Vuelta con el Cuaderno" en Teruel y se nos unieron en el tramo Teruel>Zaragoza. En Albarracín nos dio tiempo para todo, callejear, almorzar, tomarnos unos refrescos y obviamente dibujar! Si estás en Espana no te pierdas esta belleza que es Albarracín... no te arrepentirás!

La Ciudad de las Ciencias, Valencia. España.

Una de las paradas esenciales de mi viaje a España este verano fue Valencia. Es una ciudad hermosa y el área llamada "Ciudad de las Ciencias" es arquitectónicamente un sueño donde las estructuras de Santiago Calatrava son las protagonistas. Los sábados puedes ver parejas de recién casados posando para su álbum de bodas y chiquillos excitados de tanta información recibida después de visitar el museo Príncipe Felipe o el Planetario. Tuve la suerte de que me tocó un día tranquilo, donde aproveché una buena sombra para combatir el calor intenso de esos días y lograr algunos dibujos.

Symposium days... Contrast / Días de simposio... Contraste.

On the last morning of the 2nd International Urban Sketching Symposium I took the workshop "contrast" which I enjoyed very much because it gave me the opportunity to work in a total different way that I am used to and with new materials. I began by putting down first the colors, blocking the areas of light and shadows and then put down the line marks to built the drawing. Here are the results: 

En la última mañana del 2do Simposio Internacional de Dibujo Urbano tomé el taller de "contraste", el cual lo disfruté muchísimo por que me dio la oportunidad de trabajar de una manera totalmente nueva y usar nuevos materiales. Comencé por aplicar los colores, bloqueando las áreas de luz y sombra y luego fui poniendo las líneas que iban creando el dibujo final. El resultado:

9th Marathon / 9no. Maratón.

I make a quick stop from posting my summer sketches to post the ones from the last drawing marathon in Santo Domingo. A group of sketchers got together on September 18th at the Botanical Garden for the 9th Drawing Marathon D.R. Here's what I manage to draw while hosting the marathon and talking about what we do with the new participants and getting others involved.

Hago un hueco entre los dibujos de verano que aun me faltan por subir para mostrarles los realizados en el maratón de dibujo en Santo Domingo. Un grupo de dibujantes nos juntamos el pasado 18 de septiembre en el Jardín Botánico para celebrar el 9no Maratón de Dibujo R.D. Aquí les dejo lo que logré dibujar mientas al mismo tiempo hacía de anfitriona, le hablaba a los participantes de que va todo esto y atendía a los que preguntaban al pasar.

And last, I would like to say that we had a great time and now its time to focus on the 10th marathon to be held on october 15th... here we go!!!! Until then...

Por último decir que la pasamos genial y ahora a concentrarnos para preparar el maratón #10 a realizarse el 15 de octubre... ahí vamos!!!!

1/52 pounds of drawing! - 1/52 libras de dibujo.

Here's my first post of the 52 pounds of drawings' challenge. Some pictures of my favorite pages. I will have to do videos of the future sketchbooks because scanning every single page will take forever. I've been focusing on drawing and haven't manage the time to scan/videotape the other sketchbooks. This week I was supposed to start Week 5 Sketchbook (today is the last day of week 4 actually), but I admit I haven't finished Week 4 yet. Little by little I am getting into it, managing time better, procrastinating less, drawing everyday... actually that is the purpose of the challenge, to draw every single day and get into the habit.

Things learned so far? Well, managing time requires at least a PhD, it is definitively my weakest point but the more you get into the habit of sketching daily it comes out naturally, before committing to this challenge, sketching was a weekend activity due to the other things in my life but I am finding very rewarding to walk around with pencil and paper at hand.

I promise to arrange the sketchbooks either via ISSUU or just a simple video, as soon as I learn how to do it. Thanks for reading and checking out the drawings. My first sketchbook is dedicated to my friend "La Negra Dominguez"... that is, my dear bike. (Hey, I am not kidding... :-) ) isn't she cute???

Aquí les dejo mi primera entrada del reto 52 Libras de Dibujo. Algunas imágenes de mis páginas favoritas. En el futuro voy a tener que hacer videos de las libretas por que escanear página a página me tomará una eternidad. Me he enfocado más en dibujar y no he manejado bien el tiempo para escanear/grabar un video de las libretas. Esta semana se supone iniciara la 5ta Semana (hoy termina oficialmente la semana #4), pero admito que aún no he terminado la anterior. Poco a poco le voy agarrando el ritmo al reto, manejando mejor mi tiempo, haraganeando menos, dibujando todos los días... de hecho de eso se trata el reto, de dibujar cada día y crear el hábito.

¿Que he aprendido hasta el momento? bueno, el manejo del tiempo requiere mínimo un PhD, este es definitivamente mi punto débil, pero mientras van pasando los días el hábito de dibujar diariamente se va convirtiendo en algo natural. Antes de iniciar este reto, el dibujar era un asunto de los fines de semana debido a los compromisos cotidianos pero hay cierta satisfacción en ir con papel y lápiz a mano a todos lados.

Prometo organizar las libretas en ISSUU o simplemente hacer videos, tan pronto aprenda a hacerlo. Gracias por leer y ver los dibujos. Mi primera libra de dibujo está dedicada a mi amiga "La Negra Domínguez"... osea, mi querida bicicleta. (Hey, no es broma... :-) ) ¿¿¿A que es hermosa!!!???
