...for the students/...para los estudiantes.

My teenage students like it when I model the drawing exercises for them, the results are very positive when they see their own teacher drawing in front of them. Or are they just tricking me to avoid working on their own art? I wonder...

Life in El Plata, Zaragoza / La vida en El Plata, Zaragoza.

Continuing with my trip around Zaragoza this past summer, one of the key spots to draw was El Plata, el small but full of charm place, where you can see men and women dancing on stage, with or without clothes, a great opportunity to practice figure drawing.

Last week I had to proctor some of the exams at the school I work and of course, I took it as another opportunity to draw. For 2 hours, in 3 different days, I had to stand in this room with 20 students, making sure they were behaving. Actually they did and it gave me a chance to do quick drawings on pencil. You can click on each image to view it bigger.

My Father's family / La Familia de mi Padre.

A few days ago we (my parents, sister and I) took a day trip to Puerto Plata, in the north of Dominican Republic, to visit my father's mother. She had some kind of heart failure and she asked to see his son. On our way there I manage to do a sketch of my mother and then upon arrival I did one of Doña Agripina (my father's mom) and some other relatives in the room. We had a good time, it's been a while since we last visited the town so we were seen everything with new eyes, I am just sorry I didn't have more time there to sketch, it was a four hours drive to go and 4 more to come back. My father was happy he could visit his mother and I was happy to sketch... the perfect WIN-WIN.

Montreal, Canada.

One of my uncles lives in the beautiful city of Montreal, so in this trip to New York I decided to include Montreal to pay my uncle a visit. Here are a couple of drawings done around the "Old" part of the city. I fall in love with this city, its people, and its architecture, what a lovely place to just relax and spend some time doing nothing... well, not really, I draw! :-)

1st International Sketching Symposium at Portland, Oregon.

Portland... espectacular!!!!

I am back home (Dominican Republic) after spending a month traveling around New York City, Portland (Oregon), Montreal and Quebec. I have been drawing all over the place and it's about time to take a minute to share those drawings with you.

In my previous post I uploaded some of the drawings done during my first week in New York, here I will post the ones done during the 1st International Sketching Symposium held on July 29th-31st at Portland.
Three days sharing with more than 70 urban sketchers, capturing the essence of Portland in our sketchbooks. It was a marvelous experience; having the opportunity to share and meet face to face most of the sketchers who's work I've been following through their websites, blogs or via the Urban Sketchers site... it was a joy to be able to draw next to so many talented artists, to learn and enrich myself with their conversations and drawings!!!
Can't wait for the 2nd symposium!!!!!!

_________

Summer break at New York / Vacaciones en Nueva York.

I'm spending some time in New York before going to Portland for the 1st International Sketching Symposium. My one week stop is a great opportunity to visit my sister and family, museums and reconnect with the N.Y City art scene. I just love New York, there is something about it that either you love it or hate it, it's all black and white, there are no mid-terms... and I absolutely LOVE N.Y. I look forward to do some drawings around the city, in the meantime here are a couple of them done on my way here at the airport an inside the plane.

On the Spot at Japan?

This drawing was done at Epcot Center, Orlando, in the Japanese pavilion. I try focusing on the different textures of the japanese trees, they are so full of different languages, it's like the Tower of Babel of textures. The diversity of the nature in this area made it the number one spot to draw.

Back in the good old days! En los viejos y buenos tiempos...

The following two drawings were done at Epcot Center, Orlando. The first one in the Mexican Pavilion and the second one in the Italian one. For quiet a long time I had lost the habit of drawing outdoors like I used to back in 1997 along with Passalacqua's class. Every single time I look at these two drawings I get the urge to go outside and JUST DRAW!

Drawing on the spot! Dibujando "in situ"!

I began sketching outdoors many years ago in a drawing class in college. I had a teacher, Mr. Passalacqua, who took us to Disney World to DRAW!!! It was such a fantastic feeling. Through the years I lost the habit of sketching outdoors but I had recently decided to go back to my roots and walk around again with my sketchbook and capture what's going on around me. Here are some of those drawing from those college years.
Enjoy!
