Dominican Republic says "NO to Fiscal Reform" / República Dominicana dice "No a la Reforma Fiscal"

Last Sunday, November 11th, Dominicans raised their voice against the new fiscal reform recently approved by the government. In the middle of artistic manifestations: poetry, songs and theatre acts, Dominicans also sang the National Anthem and made it clear that the young middle class is alive and it will not give up easily.

El pasado domingo, 11 de noviembre, los Dominicanos alzaron su voz en contra de la nueva reforma fiscal aprobada por el gobierno. Entre manifestaciones artísticas: poesía, canto, y teatro, los Dominicanos cantaron el Himno Nacional y dejaron claro que la juventud de la clase media está viva y no se rendirá tan fácilmente.

It was a beautiful night, with its own magic! Interesting people, good wine, fantastic music, and an environment of learning I had been missing for a while. It was an awesome vibe and, of course, a great opportunity to sketch. Thanks to Huayna, our host, for organizing such a special night. Can't wait for the next one!

Fue una noche hermosa, con su propia magia. Personas interesantes, buen vino, música fantástica, y un ambiente de aprendizaje que ya extrañaba desde hace tiempo. Una vibra espectacular y, obviamente, una gran oportunidad para bocetar. Gracias a la anfitriona Huayna, por organizar una noche tan especial. ¡Ya quiero que llegue la próxima reunión!

1st International Sketching Symposium at Portland, Oregon.

Portland... espectacular!!!!

I am back home (Dominican Republic) after spending a month traveling around New York City, Portland (Oregon), Montreal and Quebec. I have been drawing all over the place and it's about time to take a minute to share those drawings with you.

In my previous post I uploaded some of the drawings done during my first week in New York, here I will post the ones done during the 1st International Sketching Symposium held on July 29th-31st at Portland.
Three days sharing with more than 70 urban sketchers, capturing the essence of Portland in our sketchbooks. It was a marvelous experience; having the opportunity to share and meet face to face most of the sketchers who's work I've been following through their websites, blogs or via the Urban Sketchers site... it was a joy to be able to draw next to so many talented artists, to learn and enrich myself with their conversations and drawings!!!
Can't wait for the 2nd symposium!!!!!!

Ya estoy de vuelta (República Dominicana) después de viajar por un mes entre Nueva York, Portland (Oregon), Montreal y Quebec. He dibujado por todos lados y ya va siendo hora de compartir estos dibujos con ustedes.

En mi entrada anterior les mostré unos dibujos de mi primera semana en New York, aquí les muestro los realizado durante el 1er. Simposio Internacional de Dibujo, realizado en Portland del 29 al 31 de Julio. Tres días compartiendo con más de 70 dibujantes urbanos, capturando la esencia de Portland en nuestras libretas de boceto. Fue una experiencia maravillosa y muy enriquecedora; compartir y conocer cara a cara a muchos de los dibujantes que por mas de 6 meses he seguido de manera virtual por medio de sus páginas web, sus blogs o en la página de los Urban Sketchers... fue realmente muy gratificante poder dibujar al lado de tantos artistas de gran talento y aprender de ellos y nutrirme con sus conversaciones y dibujos!!!
Ya quiero que llegue el 2do Simposio...!!!!!!

2nd Drawing Marathon D.R./ 2do Maratón de Dibujo R.D.

On July 11th we did it again, the dominican sketchers met once again to draw for a complete day. We met at 9:30 am in Acrópolis Center in Santo Domingo and sketched until 1:00 pm. The same day Spain played against Holland in the Soccer World Cup. Spain won 1-0!!!!
Here are a couple of drawings from that day...

El 11 de julio lo hicimos de nuevo, los dibujantes dominicanos nos juntamos a dibujar por un día completo. Nos encontramos a las 9:30 am en el centro comercial Acrópolis de Santo Domingo y dibujamos hasta la 1:00 pm. Ese mismo día jugaba España contra Holanda en la Copa Mundial de Fútbol. España ganó 1-0!!!

1st Drawing Marathon D.R. / 1er Maratón de Dibujo R.D.

"I had an idea, why? WHY NOT? If people around the world got together just to sketch, why can't we do the same in DR? I said to myself... and that is how it all began." Orling Domínguez

On may 15th, 2010, a few drawing lovers in Dominican Republic got together to draw for an entire day. I posted the event on Facebook and people actually show up! I decided to host the 1st Drawing Marathon on the same day of the 27th Sketchcrawl to get this thing rolling in Dominican Republic. I know it will take a while until people get the idea of what sketching outdoors, on location, is all about but it is a start. At the time of this post we had just completed two drawing marathons and one half-marathon in D.R., the group is being defined and the committed ones continue to show up... let's see where this adventure take us.
For the first marathon we draw at the Colonial Zone, in downtown Santo Domingo. Kids, beginners, and veterans drawing around Columbus Plaza. It didn't matter the bad weather, the first Drawing marathon was a success thanks to every single sketcher that showed up. Thanks to all of them!!!!!
Today we are using a group on Facebook named DIBUJANDO R.D. to post our drawings, so please, feel free to stop by (just click on the name). I hope the group continues to grow and that we can enjoy more drawing marathons in the future.

"Se me ocurrio una idea... porque? POR QUE NO? ¿ya que a nivel mundial existen personas que se juntan a dibujar, por que no lo hacemos aquí en República Dominicana?, me dije... y así comenzó todo!" Orling Domínguez

El pasado 15 de mayo, algunos amantes del dibujo nos reunimos durante todo un día a dibujar. Yo publiqué un evento en Facebook y las personas de hecho se presentaron! Decidí que la fecha del 1er Maratón de Dibujo debía coincidir con la del Sketchcrawl #27 a nivel mundial, para darle energía a la idea y que comenzara a correr. Se que tomará un tiempo hasta que las personas se acostumbren a la idea de salir a dibujar al aire libre, "in situ", y que se enteren de que se trata todo esto, pero ya dimos el primer paso. Al momento de publicar esta entrada ya hemos realizado dos maratones y un medio maratón en Rep. Dom., el grupo se va definiendo y los más comprometidos siguen apoyando los eventos... vamos a ver hasta donde nos lleva esta aventura.
El 1er Maratón de Dibujo se realizó en la Zona Colonial, en la parte baja de la ciudad de Santo Domingo. Niños, principiantes y veteranos dibujaron alrededor de la Plaza Colón; a pesar del mal tiempo el evento fue un éxito gracias al apoyo de cada uno de los dibujantes que se presentaron. Gracias a todos ellos!!!!
En el presente utilizamos un grupo en Facebook llamado DIBUJANDO R.D. con la finalidad de compartir nuestros dibujos, así que eres libre de visitarnos (solo presiona en el nombre) y espero que el grupo siga creciendo y que disfrutemos de más maratones de dibujo en el futuro.

On the Spot at Japan?

This drawing was done at Epcot Center, Orlando, in the Japanese pavilion. I try focusing on the different textures of the japanese trees, they are so full of different languages, it's like the Tower of Babel of textures. The diversity of the nature in this area made it the number one spot to draw.

Este dibujo fue hecho en Epcot Center, Orlando, en el pabellón de Japón. Me quise enfocar en las diferentes texturas de los árboles japoneses, tienen una riqueza de lenguaje increíble! Es como la torre de babel de las texturas. La diversidad de la naturaleza en esta área la hizo ser la opción #1 como lugar para dibujar.

Back in the good old days! En los viejos y buenos tiempos...

The following two drawings were done at Epcot Center, Orlando. The first one in the Mexican Pavilion and the second one in the Italian one. For quiet a long time I had lost the habit of drawing outdoors like I used to back in 1997 along with Passalacqua's class. Every single time I look at these two drawings I get the urge to go outside and JUST DRAW!

Los siguientes dos dibujos fueron realizados en Epcot Center, Orlando. El primero es en el pabellón de México y el segundo es del área de Italia. Por mucho tiempo olvidé el hábito de dibujar al aire libre como solía hacer por el 1997, junto a la clase de Passalacqua. Cada vez que veo estos dibujos me entra una urgencia de salir a la calle y SIMPLEMENTE DIBUJAR!

Drawing on the spot! Dibujando "in situ"!

I began sketching outdoors many years ago in a drawing class in college. I had a teacher, Mr. Passalacqua, who took us to Disney World to DRAW!!! It was such a fantastic feeling. Through the years I lost the habit of sketching outdoors but I had recently decided to go back to my roots and walk around again with my sketchbook and capture what's going on around me. Here are some of those drawing from those college years.

Comencé a dibujar al aire libre con una clase en la universidad. Yo tenía un profesor, Mr. Passalacqua, que nos llevaba a Disney a DIBUJAR! Era una experiencia fantástica. A través de los años perdí el hábito de dibujar al aire libre, pero recientemente he decidido retomarlo volviendo a mis raíces y salir a caminar con mi libreta de dibujo a mano para capturar lo que sucede a mi alrededor. Aquí les dejo algunos dibujos de esos años de universidad. Disfrútalos!

So, here is my attempt to open a blog to share my drawings on the spot or reportage drawing as they're called as well. I hope to upload my drawings as soon as I do them or at least upload them weekly.
Drawing by the pound!, as I said in the "About" page, were the words of advice from my master teacher Mr.  David J. Passalacqua, an amazing artist and human being who was my teacher back in 1994-1997 at Parsons School of Design. David pass away in 2004 and part of opening this blog is to honor his memoir, his teachings and the unforgettable times drawing outdoors in his class, in the streets of New York City or at Disney and Epcot Center.
Thank you David for all you taught me and for sharing your wisdom with all your students! Forever Dear...

Esta entrada es mi intento por abrir un blog para compartir mis bocetos o dibujo reportajes como se les llama también. Espero subir los dibujos tan pronto como los haga o por lo menos una vez a la semana.
A dibujar por libra!, tal y como lo explico en la página "About", fueron las palabras de consejo que me dió mi maestro, El Sr. David J. Passalacqua, un artista genial y un gran ser humano, quien fue mi profesor en los años 1994-1997 en Parsons School of Design. David murió en el 2004 y una de las razones para abrir este blog es honrar su memoria, sus enseñanzas y los inolvidables momentos que pasamos en su clase dibujando en las calles de New York o en los parques de Disney y Epcot.
Gracias David por todo lo que me enseñaste y por compartir tu sabiduría con todos tus estudiantes! Siempre querido...
